Technical Data

Materials & Construction

Understanding the materials in an IBC tote helps you select the right unit for your application and maintain it properly over its service life.

Bottle (Inner Container)

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

FDA-approved for food contact, UV-stabilized, impact-resistant, chemical-resistant to most acids, bases, and solvents. Blow-molded as a single seamless piece with no weld lines. Operating temperature range: -40 degrees F to 150 degrees F (-40 degrees C to 66 degrees C). Specific gravity: 0.941 - 0.965 g/cm3.

Cage (Outer Frame)

Galvanized Steel Tubing & Mesh

Hot-dip galvanized or electro-galvanized steel provides corrosion resistance for outdoor and industrial environments. Tube diameter typically 25-32 mm with mesh reinforcement panels. Designed to support the bottle under full-load conditions and enable safe stacking of filled units.

Pallet (Base)

Hardwood, Composite HDPE, or Steel

Wood pallets are heat-treated to ISPM-15 standards. Composite pallets are molded from recycled HDPE and are rot-proof, pest-proof, and moisture-immune. Steel pallets offer maximum durability and longest service life. All pallet types feature standard 48" x 40" footprint with 4-way forklift entry.

Valve (Discharge)

Polypropylene or Stainless Steel

Standard 2" NPS (National Pipe Straight) thread connection. Butterfly valves provide quick quarter-turn operation. Ball valves offer full-port flow and positive shutoff. Stainless steel valves for chemical and food-grade applications requiring metal-to-metal sealing surfaces.

Cap (Fill Opening)

Polypropylene with EPDM Gasket

Standard 6" (150mm) or 8" (200mm) diameter screw-on cap with built-in atmospheric vent. The vent prevents vacuum lock during dispensing and allows air to enter as liquid exits. EPDM gasket provides a liquid-tight seal when closed.

Gaskets

EPDM or Viton (FKM)

EPDM gaskets are standard for food-grade and general-purpose applications, offering excellent water, steam, and weather resistance. Viton gaskets are specified for chemical applications requiring resistance to fuels, oils, acids, and solvents at elevated temperatures.

Applications

Use Cases by Industry

Used IBC totes serve thousands of applications across dozens of industries. Here are some of the most common ways our customers put them to work.

Industrial & Manufacturing

Coolant and Cutting Fluid Storage

Store and dispense machine coolants, cutting oils, and metalworking fluids directly on the production floor. The bottom valve allows gravity-fed dispensing or pump connection.

Parts Washing Stations

Use as a bulk reservoir for parts-washing solvents and cleaning solutions. Connect to a pump and spray wand for efficient equipment cleaning.

Waste Oil Collection

Chemical-grade totes are ideal for collecting used motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and other waste oils for recycling pickup.

Production Line Ingredient Storage

Food-grade totes store liquid ingredients at the point of use in food manufacturing, reducing forklift trips and improving line efficiency.

Agricultural & Farming

Irrigation Water Storage

Store harvested rainwater or well water for drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, and hand watering. One 275-gallon tote provides enough water for approximately 500-800 square feet of garden for two weeks.

Liquid Fertilizer Mixing

Mix and store liquid fertilizers, compost teas, and foliar sprays in bulk. The bottom valve makes it easy to connect to sprayer equipment.

Livestock Watering

Gravity-fed watering systems for cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and poultry. A single 275-gallon tote can supply a small herd for several days.

Pesticide and Herbicide Storage

Chemical-grade totes safely contain pesticides, herbicides, and crop protection chemicals. Always match the tote grade to the chemical being stored.

Residential & Homestead

Rainwater Harvesting

Connect to downspouts to collect rooftop rainwater for garden irrigation, car washing, and general outdoor use. A 275-gallon tote captures the runoff from approximately 170 square feet of roof during 1 inch of rainfall.

Emergency Water Storage

Food-grade totes provide affordable bulk emergency water storage. One tote holds enough water for a family of four for approximately 34 days at FEMA-recommended consumption rates.

Pool and Hot Tub Filling

Store water for filling, topping off, or treating residential pools, hot tubs, and above-ground swimming pools.

Pressure Washer Supply

Use as a bulk water supply tank for pressure washers, eliminating the need for a nearby hose bib and providing consistent water pressure.

Construction & Landscaping

Job Site Water Supply

Bring water to remote construction sites for concrete mixing, dust suppression, equipment cleaning, and worker sanitation stations.

Dust Suppression

Fill with water and connect to a pump or gravity-feed hose for wetting down unpaved roads, demolition sites, and excavation areas to control airborne dust.

Hydroseeding Supply

Store water, seed slurry, or mulch mixtures for hydroseeding and erosion control applications on construction and landscaping projects.

Bulk Material Transport

Move large volumes of liquid materials — sealants, adhesives, paints, cleaning solutions — to and around job sites efficiently.

Transparent Pricing

What Affects Pricing?

We believe in transparent, fair pricing. The cost of a used IBC tote depends on several factors, and we're happy to explain exactly how we arrive at every quote. Here are the key variables:

  • Content Grade: Food-grade totes command a premium due to higher sourcing costs and stricter handling requirements. Chemical-grade totes are the most affordable option.
  • Physical Condition: Grade A units cost more than Grade C, reflecting the superior cosmetic and functional state. Grade B offers the best value for most industrial applications.
  • Size: 330-gallon totes typically cost 10-20% more than 275-gallon equivalents of the same grade and condition.
  • Quantity: Volume discounts begin at 10 units (5-15% off) and scale significantly at 50+ (15-25% off) and 100+ (25-40% off) quantities.
  • Market Conditions: Supply and demand fluctuate seasonally. Spring and summer see higher demand for agricultural and rainwater uses, which can affect food-grade pricing.
  • Cleaning Level: Triple-rinsed or steam-cleaned totes cost more than as-is units due to additional processing. Cleaning adds $15-$30 per unit depending on the method.
  • Delivery Distance: Local pickup is free. Metro Detroit delivery costs $50-$150 depending on quantity. Regional freight is quoted based on distance, weight, and carrier rates.
  • Pallet Type: Totes on composite or steel pallets may carry a slight premium over standard wood pallets. Specify your preference when requesting a quote.

Care Guide

Maintenance & Care Instructions

Proper maintenance extends the life of your IBC tote by years and ensures safe, reliable operation. Follow these guidelines to get the most out of your purchase.

Cleaning & Sanitizing

For general cleaning, rinse the interior with warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. For food-grade applications, use an FDA-approved sanitizer after the detergent wash. Avoid abrasive brushes or scouring pads that can scratch the HDPE interior and create harboring points for bacteria. For stubborn residue, a 160 degree F hot water rinse with alkaline cleaner is effective. Never use chlorine-based bleach on HDPE containers as it can cause stress cracking over time.

UV Protection

HDPE is UV-stabilized but prolonged direct sunlight will eventually degrade the plastic and promote algae growth in water storage applications. For outdoor installations, use an opaque UV-protective wrap, paint the exterior with a UV-resistant coating, or position the tote in a shaded area. If storing water, blocking sunlight is the single most effective step to preventing algae. Our accessories catalog includes purpose-built UV wraps for IBC totes.

Winter Freeze Protection

Water expands approximately 9% when it freezes, which can crack an HDPE bottle. In freezing climates, either drain the tote below 90% capacity to allow expansion room, insulate with a thermal blanket, or use one of our IBC heating blankets to maintain temperature above freezing. Never allow a completely full tote to freeze. For seasonal storage, drain completely, leave the valve open, and store upside down if possible to prevent water pooling.

Valve Maintenance

Inspect the discharge valve monthly for leaks, stiffness, or debris buildup. Butterfly valves should turn freely with a quarter turn. Ball valves should open and close smoothly with no binding. Replace gaskets annually or whenever signs of seepage appear. If a valve becomes difficult to operate, it may be clogged with sediment — remove, disassemble, clean, and reassemble. Replacement valves are available in our accessories section.

Cap and Gasket Care

Check the fill cap gasket for compression set, cracking, or deterioration every 6 months. A worn gasket allows contamination and evaporation. Replace gaskets preventatively rather than waiting for failure. When opening and closing the fill cap, thread it on straight to avoid cross-threading, which damages both the cap and the bottle neck threads. Replacement caps and gaskets are available individually or in bulk.

Cage and Pallet Inspection

Inspect the steel cage quarterly for dents that compress the bottle, broken welds, and rust. Minor surface rust can be treated with a zinc-rich spray paint to restore corrosion protection. Check the pallet for cracks, splits, rot (wood pallets), and secure attachment to the cage. Ensure forklift channels are clear and that the pallet sits level on the ground. Replacement cage panels, brackets, and pallets are available in our accessories catalog.

Long-Term Storage

For totes that will be stored empty for extended periods, rinse the interior, leave the valve open to allow air circulation, and store in a covered area out of direct sunlight. If stacking empty totes, limit to 4 high maximum on level ground. Store with the fill cap loosely placed (not threaded tight) to prevent vacuum seal formation and allow moisture to evaporate. Inspect stored totes quarterly for pest intrusion, cage rust, and pallet deterioration.

Environmental Impact

The Green Choice

Manufacturing a single new 275-gallon IBC tote requires approximately 30-40 pounds of virgin HDPE resin derived from petroleum, 15-20 pounds of steel for the cage, and a hardwood pallet. The total carbon footprint of new tote production is estimated at 120-150 kg of CO2 equivalent, consuming over 2,000 gallons of process water and significant electrical energy for blow-molding, welding, and finishing.

When you purchase a used IBC tote, you bypass this entire manufacturing process. The only resources consumed are the fuel for transportation and, in the case of cleaned units, a small amount of water and cleaning agents. This represents an 85% or greater reduction in environmental impact compared to buying new.

A single used IBC tote diverts 50-70 pounds of HDPE plastic from landfills. Considering that HDPE takes an estimated 400-500 years to decompose in a landfill, every tote you reuse represents a meaningful contribution to reducing long-term plastic waste. Our facility processes over 10,000 totes annually, which means we collectively prevent more than 500,000 pounds of plastic from entering the waste stream each year.

Beyond the direct environmental benefits, choosing used totes reduces demand for virgin petroleum-based plastic production, decreases industrial water consumption, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and supports the development of a sustainable circular economy for industrial packaging. Every used tote you purchase is a vote for responsible resource management.

Common Questions

Can I use a used IBC tote for drinking water?

Food-grade totes that previously held potable liquids can be used for drinking water storage after thorough cleaning. We recommend our triple-rinsed food-grade totes for this purpose. Always verify the previous contents matched your intended use, and consider adding an FDA-approved liner for an extra layer of safety.

How do I know what was previously stored in the tote?

Every IBC tote we sell comes with documented previous-content information based on our sourcing records. Original manufacturer labels are preserved when available. If a tote's history cannot be verified, it is classified as industrial-grade only.

Do you offer delivery?

Yes. We offer pickup from our Detroit facility, local delivery throughout the Metro Detroit area, and freight shipping across Michigan and the Midwest. Delivery pricing depends on quantity and distance. Contact us for a delivered price quote.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no minimum — we happily sell single totes to homeowners, hobbyists, and small businesses. Volume discounts start at 10 units and increase at 50+ and 100+ quantities.

Can I inspect totes before buying?

Absolutely. We welcome customers to visit our Detroit facility and hand-pick their totes. Walk-in hours are available, or you can schedule an appointment for guaranteed availability of specific grades and sizes.

What is the lifespan of a used IBC tote?

A quality IBC tote can be safely reused 5-7 times over its lifetime, which can span 10-15 years or more depending on the application, storage conditions, and contents. Used totes purchased from us typically have 3-5 more reuse cycles remaining. Proper maintenance — including UV protection, freeze prevention, and regular gasket replacement — maximizes service life.

Are your totes compatible with my existing IBC equipment?

Our totes use the industry-standard 2" NPS (National Pipe Straight) bottom valve thread, which is compatible with virtually all IBC dispensing equipment, pumps, adapters, and fittings sold in North America. The 48" x 40" pallet footprint fits standard racking, forklifts, and pallet jacks. If you have specific equipment compatibility questions, contact us with your equipment details and we will confirm.

Do you buy used IBC totes?

Yes, we purchase used IBC totes from businesses and individuals. We buy totes in all conditions — from one-trip pristine units to heavily worn containers destined for material recycling. Contact us with the quantity, previous contents, and general condition for a buyback quote. Pickup service is available for large quantities in the Metro Detroit area.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, business checks, wire transfers, ACH payments, and all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover). Net-30 payment terms are available for established business accounts with approved credit. For new business accounts, we require prepayment on the first order.

How should I transport IBC totes?

IBC totes can be transported on flatbed trucks, enclosed trailers, or in pickup truck beds (for single units). They should always be transported upright on their pallets with the valve in the closed position. Secure totes with straps or chains to prevent shifting during transit. A standard pickup truck can carry one empty tote. A full-size flatbed trailer can hold 2-4 totes. A 53-foot semi-trailer holds approximately 56-60 totes.
