(313) 555-1234The Transportation Process
From your first call to final delivery confirmation, here's exactly how our transportation service works. Every step is designed for reliability, transparency, and container safety.
Request a Pickup or Delivery
Contact us by phone, email, or through the form above. Share the location, number of totes, their condition (full, empty, residue status), and your preferred timeframe. Same-day scheduling is available in our SE Michigan core zone. Standard scheduling requires 48 hours advance notice.
Site & Load Assessment
For first-time pickups, we gather information about your site — dock availability, forklift access, ground-level loading needs, security protocols, and any access restrictions. This ensures we send the right vehicle and equipment for your specific location.
Vehicle Assignment
Based on the quantity, site conditions, and route, we assign the optimal vehicle from our fleet — flatbed for large volumes, box truck for weather protection, curtain-sider for flexible loading, or utility vehicle for small quantities. The right vehicle prevents damage and speeds loading.
Quote & Confirmation
We provide a firm transport quote within 24 hours (4 hours for priority, 1 hour for rush). The quote includes the pickup/delivery date, time window, vehicle type, and total cost. No hidden fees — the quoted price is the final price. You confirm, and we lock in the schedule.
Pre-Trip Preparation
On the scheduled day, our team conducts a pre-trip vehicle inspection, loads securing equipment (straps, edge protectors, load bars), and reviews the route plan. For hazmat loads, proper placarding and documentation are prepared. The driver reviews site-specific instructions.
GPS-Tracked Transit
From dispatch to arrival, your shipment is tracked in real time via GPS. Our dispatch team monitors every route and will proactively communicate any delays, detours, or schedule changes. You can request real-time location updates at any time during transit.
Professional Loading/Unloading
Our drivers are trained specifically for IBC tote handling. They know how to safely load and unload containers using forklifts, lift gates, and manual positioning. Totes are secured with rated strapping and edge protectors to prevent cage damage, shifting, and tipping during transit.
Delivery Confirmation
The driver confirms delivery or pickup with a signed receipt documenting the quantities, condition notes, and timestamp. You receive a digital copy immediately via email along with any applicable certificates, manifests, or inspection reports.
Post-Delivery Follow-Up
After every delivery, our team follows up to confirm everything arrived as expected. Any issues are addressed immediately. For recurring routes, we use feedback from each delivery to optimize future scheduling, routing, and vehicle selection.
Invoicing & Documentation
Invoicing is straightforward — you receive a single invoice for the transport service within 24 hours of completion. Contract customers receive consolidated monthly invoices. All supporting documentation (receipts, manifests, certificates) is attached or available on request.
Service Area
Based in Detroit, our fleet operates throughout Michigan and extends into the surrounding Great Lakes states and Southern Ontario. Our drivers know these corridors intimately — from the industrial zones of Southeast Michigan to the agricultural regions of the western part of the state and beyond.
For locations outside our standard service area, we coordinate with trusted regional carriers to provide seamless door-to-door service at competitive rates. We handle all carrier coordination so you deal only with us.

Our Fleet
We maintain a diverse fleet specifically configured for IBC tote transport. Different container quantities and site conditions require different vehicles, and we match the right truck to every job. Every vehicle in our fleet is DOT-inspected, GPS-tracked, and equipped with proper securing equipment.
53-Foot Flatbed Trucks
Up to 48 totes per loadOur workhorse for large volume pickups and deliveries. Side-loading capability makes them ideal for sites without dock access. Totes are secured with rated strapping and edge protectors to prevent cage damage in transit. Best per-unit cost for large shipments. Available with or without driver CDL (DOT weight limits apply).
26-Foot Box Trucks
Up to 16 totes per loadEnclosed transport for weather protection and security. Lift gate equipped for ground-level loading at sites without docks or forklifts. Perfect for mid-size orders and urban deliveries where a flatbed is impractical. Interior tie-down points prevent shifting during transit.
Curtain-Side Trucks
Up to 36 totes per loadThe flexibility of a flatbed with the weather protection of a box truck. Side curtains allow forklift loading from either side, speeding up multi-stop routes and dock-free facilities. Excellent for routes with multiple stops where fast loading and unloading is critical.
Pickup & Utility Trucks
1-4 totes per loadFor small-quantity pickups, sample deliveries, and urgent single-unit runs. These trucks navigate tight spaces, residential areas, farm properties, and jobsites where larger vehicles can't go. Same-day dispatch available for emergency needs.
Hazmat-Designated Vehicles
Varies by configurationSpecially equipped for transporting containers with hazardous residues. Proper placarding, spill containment kits, emergency response equipment, and drivers with current hazmat endorsements. Full DOT compliance for hazardous materials transport.
Transport Options & Pricing
We offer several transport configurations to match your budget and timing requirements. Pricing is based on distance, load size, scheduling flexibility, and service level.
Full Truckload (FTL)
Best per-unit rateIdeal when you have 24+ totes ready for a single pickup or need a large delivery. Dedicated truck, direct route, fastest transit times. No sharing with other shipments — your containers get exclusive vehicle space. Typical cost: $2-5 per loaded mile depending on vehicle type.
- Dedicated vehicle for your shipment only
- Direct routing — no intermediate stops
- Fastest transit times of any option
- Best per-unit pricing on large volumes
- Ideal for 24-48 tote shipments
Less Than Truckload (LTL)
Most cost-effective for small loadsCost-effective for smaller quantities (1-23 totes). We consolidate your shipment with other orders on the same route corridor. Slightly longer transit windows but significantly lower per-unit costs. Perfect for regular small-batch orders and businesses not yet at full-truckload volumes.
- Shared vehicle space — lower cost per unit
- Route consolidation for maximum efficiency
- 2-5 business day delivery windows
- Ideal for 1-23 tote shipments
- Available on all route corridors
Scheduled Routes (Recurring)
Lowest per-unit rateRegular weekly or bi-weekly pickups at a fixed rate. Perfect for businesses that generate a steady flow of used totes or need regular deliveries of clean containers. Route customers get priority scheduling, the lowest per-unit transport costs, and predictable monthly expenses.
- Fixed pickup day and time window
- Locked-in per-unit pricing
- Priority scheduling — no availability delays
- Monthly consolidated invoicing
- Dedicated driver who knows your site

Pricing Factors
Transport pricing is calculated based on several factors. Here's what determines your per-unit and total transport cost so there are no surprises.
Distance
Mileage from origin to destination is the primary cost driver. Routes within our core SE Michigan zone are the most affordable. Regional routes (greater Michigan, Ohio, Indiana) are moderately priced. Extended routes (IL, WI, Ontario) carry higher transport costs.
Load Size
Larger loads have lower per-unit transport costs. A full truckload (48 totes) has the lowest per-unit rate. LTL (under 24 totes) costs more per unit but less total. Single-unit pickups have the highest per-unit cost but are still affordable.
Service Level
Standard scheduling (48-72 hour lead time) provides the best pricing. Priority (24-48 hour) carries a moderate premium. Same-day/rush service has the highest premium but guarantees immediate dispatch.
Site Conditions
Standard dock loading is the most efficient. Sites requiring lift gate, ground-level loading, or manual positioning may incur a small additional fee. Restricted-access sites with security protocols or limited hours may affect scheduling and cost.
Transportation in Action
Weekly Route — Automotive Supplier Network
We established a weekly pickup route connecting four Tier 2 automotive suppliers in the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint triangle. Every Tuesday, our flatbed truck visits all four sites, collecting 30-45 used totes and delivering clean replacements. The route has been running for over a year with a 99% on-time record. Total monthly transport cost is 40% lower than what the suppliers were paying for ad-hoc pickups.
Emergency Rush — Food Processor Spill Response
A Grand Rapids food processor had a production issue that contaminated 25 IBC totes and needed them removed from their production floor immediately to maintain food safety compliance. We dispatched a box truck within 3 hours of the call, loaded all 25 containers, and transported them to our facility for assessment and recycling. The processor was back in compliance before the next USDA inspection.
Cross-Border — Ontario Manufacturer
A Kitchener-Waterloo chemical manufacturer needed 80 used IBC totes delivered from our Detroit inventory. We handled all customs documentation for the cross-border shipment, coordinated with Canadian border services, and delivered the full load in two flatbed runs over three days. The customer now orders quarterly with standing cross-border arrangements.
Safety & Compliance
Every shipment is handled with full regulatory compliance and operational best practices. Safety is not optional — it's the foundation of every transport operation we run.
DOT Vehicle Compliance
All vehicles are DOT inspected and maintained on a strict preventive maintenance schedule. Pre-trip inspections are conducted before every dispatch. We maintain detailed maintenance logs and address any issues before vehicles go on the road. Our fleet meets all FMCSA requirements.
CDL & Driver Certification
Drivers hold current CDL credentials where required by vehicle weight class. All drivers complete ongoing safety training, defensive driving courses, and annual DOT physicals. Hazmat endorsements are maintained for drivers on hazardous material routes.
Cargo Securing Protocols
IBC totes are secured using rated strapping, edge protectors, load bars, and blocking techniques appropriate to the vehicle type. We prevent shifting, tipping, and cage damage through proper securing methods. Loaded weights are verified against vehicle ratings before departure.
Hazmat Transportation
When containers have hazardous residues, our team follows DOT hazmat transportation protocols including proper placarding, shipping papers, driver certification, emergency response information, and spill containment equipment. We coordinate with your EHS team to ensure full compliance.
Full Cargo Insurance
Every shipment is covered by comprehensive cargo insurance. In the unlikely event of transit damage, claims are processed quickly and fairly. Coverage limits are sufficient for the full value of typical IBC tote loads. Certificate of insurance available upon request.
Driver Training & Accountability
Our drivers are trained specifically for IBC tote handling. They understand the containers, know how to load and unload safely using forklifts and lift gates, and represent IBC Recycling Detroit professionally at every customer site. Customer feedback is reviewed after every delivery.
Environmental Route Optimization
We optimize routes using planning software to minimize fuel consumption, emissions, and drive time. Consolidated loads, efficient scheduling, and multi-stop routing keep our transportation carbon footprint as low as possible while maintaining service quality.
Incident Response Procedures
In the event of a vehicle incident, spill, or cargo issue, our drivers follow documented emergency response procedures. Spill kits are carried on all routes. Our dispatch team maintains 24/7 emergency contact capability during active shipments.
Cross-Border Compliance
For Ontario shipments, we maintain compliance with both US and Canadian transportation regulations. Customs documentation, border crossing permits, and cross-border insurance are arranged in advance of every international shipment. We handle the paperwork so you don't have to.
Seasonal Transport Considerations
Spring
Road weight restrictions on Michigan secondary roads may affect rural delivery routes. Agricultural demand surge increases transport volume. Plan spring pickups and deliveries 1-2 weeks ahead. Gravel and dirt road access may be limited during spring thaw.
Summer
Peak construction season can cause highway delays. We adjust routes to avoid major construction zones. Longest operating hours — more scheduling flexibility. Enclosed transport recommended for heat-sensitive contents to prevent container expansion.
Fall
Harvest season drives agricultural container returns. Excellent time for bulk pickups from farm operations. Daylight shortens — scheduling loading before dusk is important for safety. Road conditions are generally excellent across all service zones.
Winter
Michigan winters can affect scheduling. We build weather buffers into winter delivery windows. Snow and ice may delay non-critical shipments by 1-2 days. We maintain winter tires and carry chains. Rush service remains available but may carry weather-related premiums.
Transportation FAQ
Do I need a forklift for loading?
Not necessarily. Our box trucks have lift gates for ground-level loading. Our flatbed drivers can operate forklifts if one is available on-site. For small quantities, our drivers can manually position totes using hand trucks. Let us know your site conditions when scheduling and we'll send the right equipment.
How many totes fit on one truck?
It depends on the vehicle: flatbed trucks hold up to 48 totes, curtain-side trucks hold up to 36, box trucks hold up to 16, and utility vehicles hold 1-4. Empty totes can sometimes be nested or stacked to increase capacity. We'll recommend the most cost-effective vehicle for your quantity.
Can you pick up and deliver on the same trip?
Absolutely. Swap runs are one of our most popular services — we pick up empty or used totes and deliver clean replacements in a single visit. This is the most efficient approach for businesses with ongoing container needs and is the basis for our scheduled route programs.
What if my site has restricted access or limited hours?
We accommodate restricted-access sites regularly. Provide your site's access requirements (security check-in, appointment windows, after-hours protocols) when scheduling. Our drivers carry proper ID and follow all site rules. We can schedule around your operating hours.
Do you transport containers that are still full?
Yes, we transport both full and empty containers. Full containers require additional securing and may affect load limits based on product weight. If the contents are hazardous, DOT hazmat transport protocols apply. Provide the product name and approximate volume when requesting a quote for full-container transport.
Is there GPS tracking I can access directly?
We provide real-time location updates upon request during active shipments. For contract customers, we can set up automated tracking notifications at key milestones (dispatched, en route, 30 minutes out, delivered). Contact our dispatch team for the most current shipment status.
What happens if the truck is late?
Our dispatch team monitors all routes in real time. If a delay occurs (traffic, weather, mechanical), we proactively contact you with an updated ETA before the original window expires. We maintain a 96% on-time delivery rate. For time-critical shipments, our rush service provides the highest scheduling priority.
Can you deliver to residential addresses?
Yes, our utility trucks and box trucks can deliver to residential addresses. Please note that residential deliveries may require additional time for navigation and unloading. The homeowner or a responsible adult should be present at delivery. Some HOAs or municipalities may have restrictions on commercial vehicle access.
