Why Choose Upcycled

Sustainability Meets Practicality

Our upcycled products don't just reduce waste — they outperform conventional alternatives in durability, capacity, and long-term value.

Built to Last

HDPE plastic is UV-stabilized, rot-proof, chemical-resistant, and rated for decades of outdoor exposure. The galvanized steel cage adds structural protection that no off-the-shelf product can match.

Genuinely Green

Every upcycled product we sell is one fewer container in a landfill and one fewer new product that needs manufacturing. You get a practical solution and a genuine environmental impact — not just marketing greenwash.

Serious Value

A 275-gallon IBC rain barrel costs a fraction of what you'd pay for a comparably sized purpose-built rain tank. The same goes for planters, composters, and storage bins — more capacity for less money.

Massive Capacity

Our IBC-based rain barrels hold 275 gallons vs. the typical 30-55 gallon rain barrels sold at home improvement stores. Our planters hold 8-20 cubic feet of soil. Our composters process hundreds of pounds of organic waste. Size matters — and IBC products deliver it.

Proven Industrial Design

IBC totes were engineered to survive industrial shipping, forklift handling, outdoor storage, and chemical exposure. That same rugged construction makes them ideal for demanding home, garden, and farm applications. These are not flimsy consumer products.

Fully Customizable

Every upcycled product we make can be tailored to your specific needs. Custom heights, additional ports, color options, special hardware, and unique configurations are all available. If you can describe it, we can probably build it.

Care Guide

Maintenance Tips

Our upcycled products are extremely low-maintenance, but a few simple steps will ensure they perform at their best for many years.

Rain Barrels

Flush the barrel once per season to remove sediment. Clean the inlet screen monthly during leaf-fall season. Drain before the first hard freeze or add a heating element for year-round use. Apply an opaque UV wrap if placed in direct sunlight to prevent algae growth. Inspect the spigot and overflow port annually.

Garden Planters

Ensure drainage holes remain clear — check at the beginning of each growing season. The HDPE body requires no sealing or treatment. If the steel cage develops rust spots, apply zinc-rich spray paint. In cold climates, empty the planter and store upside down or allow soil to freeze in place (the HDPE handles freeze-thaw cycles without cracking).

Composters

Keep the ventilation ports clear of debris for proper airflow. Drain compost tea regularly through the bottom spigot to prevent waterlogging. Add a mix of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials for optimal decomposition. Internal temperature should reach 130-160 degrees F during active composting — the enclosed design helps achieve and maintain this range.

Animal Feeders & Waterers

Clean water troughs weekly during warm months to prevent algae and bacteria. Inspect access openings for sharp edges that could injure animals — we deburr all edges, but check periodically after impact events. For winter use, add a stock tank heater or use our heated base accessory to prevent freezing. Inspect float valve mechanisms monthly if equipped.

Storage Bins

Keep lids closed when not in use to prevent water accumulation and pest entry. Oil hinges annually. Inspect padlock hasps for corrosion. If storing moisture-sensitive materials, consider adding a desiccant packet inside. Caster wheels should be lubricated semi-annually and checked for bearing wear under heavy loads.

Aquaponics Systems

Monitor water pH daily (target 6.8-7.2 for most systems). Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels weekly. Clean grow bed media annually by rinsing with system water. Inspect pump and bell siphon monthly. In cold climates, insulate the fish tank with our thermal wrap accessory to maintain stable water temperature.

Environmental Impact

The Green Numbers

50-70 lbs

Of HDPE plastic diverted from landfill per upcycled product

400+ yrs

The estimated time HDPE takes to decompose in a landfill — every tote we upcycle avoids this

120+ kg

Of CO2 emissions avoided per product compared to new manufacturing

100%

Of the original IBC material is repurposed — nothing goes to waste

Why Upcycling Matters More Than Recycling

When an IBC tote is recycled, the HDPE plastic is shredded, melted, and reformed into lower-grade products — a process that still consumes significant energy and results in material degradation. The steel cage is melted down for scrap. The pallet is chipped or landfilled. This downcycling process recovers some material value but loses the embodied energy and engineering of the original container.

Upcycling, by contrast, preserves the original form and function of the container while giving it a new purpose. A rain barrel retains the full structural integrity of the IBC tote. A garden planter uses the same food-grade HDPE that was approved for food contact. The steel cage continues to serve as structural reinforcement. No melting, no reprocessing, no material degradation — just smart repurposing.

The environmental calculus is clear: upcycling an IBC tote into a functional product requires approximately 95% less energy than recycling the materials and manufacturing a new product from scratch. It preserves 100% of the material value, extends the functional lifespan by 10-20 years, and gives the customer a superior product at a lower cost. Upcycling is the highest and best use of retired industrial containers — and it is the core of our mission at IBC Recycling Detroit.

Common Questions

Upcycled Product FAQ

Are upcycled IBC products safe for growing food?

Yes. All of our garden planters, aquaponics systems, and food-contact upcycled products are made from food-grade HDPE that was originally manufactured for food storage. HDPE does not leach chemicals into soil or water under normal conditions and is the same material used in milk jugs, food containers, and cutting boards. We use only food-grade source totes for any product that will contact soil, water, or food plants.

How long will an upcycled IBC product last outdoors?

HDPE plastic is rated for decades of outdoor exposure. The galvanized steel cage provides additional structural protection. In practical terms, our upcycled products will outlast wood, standard plastic, and most metal alternatives by a significant margin. Rain barrels, planters, and storage bins should last 15-25 years or more with basic maintenance. UV exposure is the primary degradation factor — using an opaque UV wrap extends outdoor life further.

Can I paint or decorate an IBC product?

Yes. HDPE can be painted with specialty plastic-compatible paints (such as Krylon Fusion or Rust-Oleum plastic spray paint). Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, apply a light scuff with fine sandpaper for adhesion, and apply multiple thin coats. For a more durable finish, request our custom paint service — we use industrial-grade HDPE-compatible coatings that are resistant to UV, peeling, and fading.

Do you ship upcycled products?

Yes. We offer local pickup from our Detroit facility, Metro Detroit delivery, and freight shipping throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Single-unit products ship via LTL freight on a standard pallet. Multi-unit orders can be consolidated for full truckload shipping. Nationwide shipping is available for orders of 5+ units. Contact us for delivered pricing to your location.

How long does it take to receive a custom order?

Standard upcycled products (rain barrels, planters, storage bins) typically have a 5-10 business day turnaround. Custom fabrication projects vary from 1-4 weeks depending on complexity. We maintain a small inventory of pre-made rain barrels and planters for faster fulfillment — ask about current availability. Rush processing is available for time-sensitive projects.

Can I use a rain barrel for drinking water?

While our rain barrels are made from food-grade HDPE, harvested rainwater is not considered potable without treatment. Rooftop runoff may contain contaminants from roofing materials, bird droppings, and atmospheric pollutants. Our rain barrels are designed for irrigation, car washing, and general outdoor water use. For drinking water storage, see our Emergency Water Storage product, which uses sanitized food-grade totes filled from a clean water source.

Do you offer installation for aquaponics systems?

We provide fully pre-cut and pre-plumbed aquaponics kits that are designed for DIY assembly. Detailed installation instructions are included with every kit. For customers who prefer professional installation, we can recommend experienced aquaponics builders in the Detroit metro area. We also offer phone and email technical support during the setup process at no additional charge.

What if I want a product that is not listed?

Contact us with your idea. We have fabricated hundreds of custom products from IBC totes over the years, and we are always excited to take on new projects. Describe what you need, provide dimensions and intended use, and our team will evaluate feasibility and provide a quote. If we cannot build it, we will tell you honestly and suggest alternatives.
